Abrantes

Client: Abrantes municipality
Phase: in project

Abrantes City Council strategy for the regeneration of the historic centre led to this input in to achieving the goal of development and cultural promotion in order to increase its visibility.

The project started with the relationship between two buildings: the old Fire Station and a totally new one.

The intention was that those buildings would relate to each other in a distinct way.

They are two extremely distinct structures and each one of them wants to affirm itself in a different way: one keeping its historic importance and characteristics; the other displaying contemporary architectural elements.

The monolithic body appears imposing, making its presence known.

The voids intend only to frame the view of the area presenting a blind façade on to the street.

This façade makes an impact on those who walk by. Affirmation of all the buildings in the urban landscape is supported by the Fire Station.

The pure and clean body dressed in white tiles, Viúva Lamego, establishes a dialogue between tradition and contemporaneity, fulfilling this purpose.
