“monte da barca” roundabout
Coruche - 2018
Coruche has the title of the world capital of cork (at county level Coruche is the largest producer of cork).
The industry produces 5 million corks for wine bottles a day.
There are other innovative areas of activity such as the Cork Oak Observatory, a unique research centre in the Montado Cork area, and the International Cork Fair, in which the main actors in the sector converge (producers, industrialists and researchers).
A piece of sculpture with a diameter of 15.30 metres is animated in the shape of a silo, evoking the idea of a reservoir, a storage of collective memory, whilst looking for the image of a precision mechanism that wants to be dynamic.
On the other hand, the circular design resembles an instrument of time recording, reinforcing the idea of memory. The 610 blocks of cork arranged in 6 overlapping rings represent the six parishes of the municipality.
Each of these rings is composed of 30x50x100 cm cork blocks that suggest the villages and places in the country of Coruche, associated with knowledge, information and archives, referring to the potential of the area containing the words Coruche World Capital of Cork / Lezíria / Montado / Sorraia.
The elements that make up the sculpture allow a visual permeability that makes it a space both limited and open, suggesting the fluidity and dynamic of a living land and a vision of the future for those who live in, work in, and visit Coruche.
